Starting from December 1st, today, and continuing until Christmas Day, a captivating display of two Christmas trees will illuminate the twin wash towers on the northern side of the iconic structure. Hockney's remarkable 10-minute animation, skillfully crafted on an iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil, breathes new life into the famous 100-metre-high chimneys that command a view of the majestic River Thames. The display will be active each evening from 5:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., spreading festive joy throughout this historic London landmark.
“Battersea Power Station is such a beautiful building, I wanted to decorate it in a way that I hoped would bring joy and hope to Londoners,” said Hockney.
David Hockney's creative journey with touch-screen technology spans more than 15 years, commencing with the iPhone in 2007 and continuing with the iPad from its inception. Throughout this period, the iPad has played a pivotal role in his artistic endeavours, contributing to significant projects such as a magnificent glass window installation at Westminster Abbey and numerous acclaimed exhibitions.
Amid the challenging backdrop of the pandemic, Hockney harnessed the power of his iPad to capture the unfolding beauty of spring, producing a series of new and hopeful artworks celebrating the natural world. This creative surge resulted in the creation of "220 for 2020" and an impressive 90-metre-long masterpiece titled "A Year in Normandie," showcasing his enduring commitment to innovation and artistic expression.
